Euroenglish: a drem kum tru

EuroEnglish
The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the EU rather than German, which was the other possibility. As part of the negotiations, Her Majesty's Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5 year phase-in plan that would be known as "EuroEnglish": --

In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c".. Sertainly, this will make the sivil sevants jump with joy. The hard "c" will be dropped in favor of the "k". This should klear up konfusion and keyboards kan have one less letter.

There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year, when the troublesome "ph" will be replaced with the "f". This will make words like "fotograf" 20% shorter.

In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible. Governments will enkorage the removal of double letters, which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil agre that the horible mes of the silent "e"'s in the language is disgraceful, and they should go away.

By the 4th yar, peopl wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing "th" with "z" and "w" with "v". During ze fifz year, ze unesesary "o" kan be dropd from vords kontaning "ou" and similar changes vud of kors be aplid to ozer kombinations of leters.

double possessives

Double possessives occur quite naturally in family relationships. I'm thinking of something like.............. my wife's mother's face

I want to talk about the daughter of my mother's best friend. Can I say the following? "I met my mother's best friend's daughter at the park last night."

You can also re-organize the sentence to get rid of one of the possessives:

"I met the daughter of my mother's best friend at the park last night."

Double Possessives

Do we say "a friend of my uncle" or "a friend of my uncle's"? In spite of the fact that "a friend of my uncle's" seems to overwork the notion of possessiveness, that is usually what we say and write. The double possessive construction is sometimes called the "post-genitive" or "of followed by a possessive case or an absolute possessive pronoun" (from the Oxford English Dictionary, which likes to show off). The double possessive has been around since the fifteenth century, and is widely accepted. It's extremely helpful, for instance, in distinguishing between "a picture of my father" (in which we see the old man) and "a picture of my father's" (which he owns). Native speakers will note how much more natural it is to say "He's a fan of hers" than "he's a fan of her."

Generally, what follows the "of" in a double possessive will be definite and human, not otherwise, so we would say "a friend of my uncle's" but not "a friend of the museum's [museum, instead]." What precedes the "of" is usually indefinite (a friend, not the best friend), unless it's preceded by the demonstratives this or that, as in "this friend of my father's."

Benvolguts pares i altres coses

benbolguts pares

JORDI ESTRADA

Joke: girls as in the Bible

Were I a math teacher....

If girls require time _and_ money, ....
should that be stated Girls = Time + Money
instead?

If girls require time _and_ money, should that be stated Girls = Time + Money
instead?
This leaves us with, using the well-known fact that time is money which you mentioned, Girls = 2*Money Under the assumption that money is the root of all evil, it can now be found that Girls = 2*sqrt(evil) In words, girls are _twice_ the root of all evil, instead of just evil, as you proved.

la computador/el computadora -Go Dutch in beijing

learning spanish

A Spanish teacher was explaining to her class of foreign students that in Spanish, unlike English, nouns are designated as either masculine or feminine. ‘House’, for example, is feminine – ‘la casa’; ‘pencil’, however, is masculine: ‘el lapiz.’

A student asked, ‘And what gender is “computer”?’ Instead of giving the answer, the teacher split the class into two groups, male and female, and asked them to decide for themselves whether ‘computer’ should be a masculine or a feminine noun. Each group was asked to give four reasons for its recommendation.

Same in any Romanic langauge

The men's group decided that ‘computer’ should definitely be of the feminine gender (‘la computadora’) because:

1. No one but their creator understands their internal logic

2. The native language they use to communicate with other computers is incomprehensible to everyone else

3. Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long term memory for possible later retrieval; and

4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending halfyour pay cheque on accessories for it.

The women's group meanwhile concluded that computers should be masculine (‘el computador’), because:

1. In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on

2. They have a lot of data but still can't think for themselves

3. They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they ARE the problem; and

4. As soon as you commit to one, you realize that if you had waited a little longer, you could have got a better model.

HAROLD
Fred, the local mortician, was brought the body of Harold Smith

a well known local businesssman. While preparing him for burial he noted that, after hundreds of such ceremonies, Harld's male organ was unbeleveably huge.

Feeling that it should not be buried with him, he removed it , carefully preserved it, and packed it in a case. He, not knowing what exactly what to do with this organ, brought it home to display it to his wife, Hortensia. He told her he had a surprise, close her eyys and then opened the case, said open your eyes and she said Oh, my god ! Harold is dead !

2) Siempre andaba contando cuentos

101 things to do with a baby

While browsing the considerable bookshelf at my girlfriends house, I noticed this little gem. A charming picture book illustrating 101 amazingly fantastical things that can be done with a Baby.

With sweet, simple illustrations and few words, Jan Ormerod paints a beautiful portrait of a loving family. Big sister learns to help, share, and enjoy her new brother. The illustrations show an affectionate family in realistic, every-day situations; washing up, nap time, jogging with Mother, a visit from Grandma, a Saturday picknick, and more

The book incorporates many positive examples of how a family can integrate and include a new baby into its routine (i.e., the baby does not have to put a damper on the family time, as too many people think). Lots of images of big sister playing with the baby, and a variety of activities. It also includes babywearing, many father-child images, nursing, and an overall positive relationship with each member of the family.

Children of the code: history of English language

Children of the code

7.Casting Spells (video 6:37)
- The printing press standardizes the unstable writing system ..."the accident of the printing press, which in England served to freeze spelling in the fifteenth century so you have these bizarre spellings" -
Dr. Malcolm Richardson, Chair, Department of English, LSU

Though readiness and readiness differentiated instruction reduce the difficulty, working through the code's confusing letter-sound relationships is what most challenges the brains of most struggling readers. There is a direct and causal relationship between the confusion in the code and the 'stutters' heard in the voice of a struggling reader. Obviously, understanding this confusion is critical to understanding the challenges involved in learning to read. As importantly, understanding how the code became so confused is critical to reframing the experience of struggling readers. The more we understand the accidents and negligence that led to the confusion in the English code the more it becomes obvious that it is absurdly negligent to blame and shame children for their struggle with it.

Latin Roots – The clergy begin to write English using the letters/sounds of Latin

French Rules – French displaces English as the official language of England

The King’s English – Henry V resurrects English writing

The Chancery Scribes – The King's scribes forge the roots of modern English

The First Millennium Bug – The fall of phoneticism and rise of confusion

The Great Vowel Shift – Major shifts in pronunciation add further confusion

Casting Spells - The printing press standardizes the unstable writing system
