03_WR_Long Summary_O tempora o mores -the past strikes back

Tame your writing skills

 after reading some history background.

Study how YOUR article was built:
  •  Structures: INTRO -BODY_ CONCLUSION.
  •  Make a LIST with 8 items you would like to incorporate in your summary.
  •  Do not copy syntax -use your comprehension to re-style the words with a new syntax.

OUTCOME: ONE Long Summaries -375 words

0. the past strikes back

(READING history  to understand World news)

TASK. Choose one of the links and ....
summarise the content to be shared next week.

"O tempora o mores"
an observation by Marcus Tullius Cicero (106 BCE - 43 BCE)
It translates in 3 options:
  •  literally as    Oh the times! Oh the customs!
  1. but more accurately as Oh what times! Oh what customs!
  2.  or alternatively, Alas the times, and the manners.                 meaning an exclamation at the evil of them.

         1# SHADOWS :  Empirical  - indulged truths.
The shadows behind the history as a  new past: three topics here

1.1#     Curious about  George Orwell?

  • Our CATALONIA Today news published new collection of  FIVE Orwellian articles.  Blend into a new unit.
  • Orwell lived, laughed, loved and left  a mark on Europe, England and Catalonia.
  • George Orwell was there to bear witness of a crucial time in the making.

1.2#    The Working Class Strikes Back  by C. Wright  - August 2018 -review

this volume aims to examine how new, anti-bureaucratic forms of syndicalist, neo-syndicalist and autonomous workers’ organisation emerge in response to changing work and production relations in the twenty-first century

1.3 the use of language in diplomacy

  • The treaty of Nerchinsk (1689) North and East in Outer Mongolia.
  • Manchu-Russian neighbours -XVII century was written in .... which language?

                a) Manchu     b) French      c) Russsian
        d) Español     e) Mandarin     f) Espèranto     g) another

Pardon my French. in 1870, when France was crushed and humiliated by the Germans, the text of the peace treaty was uniquely in French.

2#  EMPIRES.  another  three topics here

 in Animal Crackers
or the sanity clause scene between Groucho and Chico
 in Duck Soup

  • Don’t forget the Sanity Clause
  • There is no Sanity Clause, as the noted philosopher Chico Marx confirmed, but the Companies Act exists and, in this instance, enabled empires to prevaricate and procrastinate, to discover.
  • Amid the confusion, the claims and counter-claims, other great Marx Brothers lines came to mind including:
  •  “The party of the first part … is hereinafter called the party of the first part.”
  • Also: “These are my principles. If you don’t like them … well, I have others.”

Our mirror goes to bygone times ... vanished glories
2A# Oh Rome, Divide et Impera
Those words were uttered by  Gaius Julius Caesar (100 BCE - 44 BCE), who was granted the title Dictator Perpetuus
  • Rome will rule the world. It is her destiny and always has been.  Claiming a line of descent back to Hercules, Romans are not lacking in civic pride. So you think you know everything about the Romans?

2B# Chaos at UK's past... It was not OK, it was KO
  • The lacuna in the British curriculum, the refusal to discuss imperialism in-depth, is not accidental. Rather, it reflects the fact that Britain as a nation has not settled on its own view of its past.

Enjoyed Apocalypsis Now, we love Coppola, of course.
still waiting to read a Viet side of their history!

wsh_WR_How to make the most of my article summarizing

A forgotten WRIGHT:
  THE  RITE  OF  RIGHT  WRITING

This was developed
 in the last century
(Ask your grandparents....)

Our task is getting somehow a long text for our standards (375 words),
5 (6) good paragraphs in most cases.

A.      Our goal

You might want to summarize an article. These are:

·         To condense quite a lot of information into a small space
·         To increase your understanding of an article
·         To activate your vocabulary
·         To go beyond your basic syntax structures

B.      Our goal
You would need to skim through the article first. Be sure you made a wide decision as you may spend one hour working on it…

a.    go through it again and again as you clarify some points you might have missed before until you completely understand. Understanding before summarizing is the essence here.
b.    Take notes spotting its main ideas in the article and jotting them down helps you get that clear picture
c.    It is better than underlining lots of text! In your own words, rewrite those main ideas. Mind you, your sentences will only tell the broader picture not the details. Therefore, your sentences should not match the original.
d.    As you read, keep questioning yourself of what points come out as important in the article. Those are the first hints.

C.      List of proposals-01

D.    Write itWhen you refer to the author for the first time, you always use their full name. When you refer to the author after that, you always use their last name. To show they are an authoritative source. The TWO sentences below show ways to do this.

             Attention to VERBS:

In "Global Warming isn't Real," Steven Collin, a professor at the University of Michigan, claims that ... According to Collin's perspective ... Collin criticizes...  In conclusion, Collin elaborates about .

New York Times critic Johann Bachman argues in "Global Warming is the Next Best Thing for the Earth" that ...  As Bachman implies in the story about ...    Bachman  supports this view by pointing out
  • ADJECTIVES: In his unusual humorous style, Huxley warns … The eerie situations let you…. A gloomy outcome hints at ominous….
  • ADVERBS:   eagerly - radically – loosely – sharply - wearily
The summary should end with the author's conclusion or last main point, most times with a statement about what the author is trying to convince the reader to believe, do, or think.

usa state name charade --01

Dali was known to do almost anything for money. He appeared in commercials for Lanvin chocolates, which featured the artist exclaiming his love for the treat before biting into it, which caused his eyes to cross and his mustache to curl.

Do you know the famous NAME TRANSPOSAL (anagram) for him?

ARTistic warming up. Surrealism (1929-....)

André Breton had expelled Dalí from the Surrealist movement in 1934 (Dali was introduced to America by art dealer Julian Levy in 1934. The exhibition in New York of Dali's works, including Persistence of Memory, created an immediate sensation.)
Dubbed “Avida Dollars” by A. Breton in 1939 the anagram translates phonetically  Salvador Dali's name. .. It marked, with little subtlety, Breton's disapproval of Dalí's commercial success and  the increasing commercialization of Dali's work, and the perception that Dali sought self-aggrandizement through fame and fortune. Some surrealists henceforth spoke of Dali in the past tense, as if he were dead.

“Avida Dollars” translates to “eager for dollars." By some accounts, still Pretty apt.

Akin to this example,

Every English USA state name can be transposed into some other word or name ….

For a word to defy transposition would be an act of treason, so to speak.

Let’s get started with nine of them

              USA STATES and their Capitals

1.-  Schools which made Law a required course do very well.

A1: DELAWARE  ……….. Dover
Schools which ma__de Law a re__quired course do ver_y well.

Do the rest... in 5 minutes

2.-  Don’t panic, Ali, for Niagara Falls enhances the sacrament of matrimony.

3.- Use an insectifuge or giant insects will destroy that lantana field.

4.-  In Diana’s shop I saw thin Diana polishing furniture.

5.- Can Eva dance outside with cars on city streets?

6.- Oh, I only saw Mexico, Lum, bus was late!

7.- The main Evil of  the Augustan age was imperialism.

8.- You must go west, Virginia, said Charles tonight.

9.- As a virgin I allure the rich Mondays and all other days.

PART2. FRONTIER AIRLINES  Cabin crew’s announcement

Such snarky
safety announcement
deserves to be
on the seven-mile-high
comedy club

Frontier Airlines announcer entertains his Flight as he put his witty spin on what are normally passenger safety instructions before taking off on his three-minute comedy routine.

The facts:

Daniel Sandberg, the sassy flight attendant started his announcement by introducing the flight attendant at the front of the plane as his wife and the one in the back as his mistress.
   (Not in the take)
He created a unique take on the flight's safety instructions.
Rows of passengers are heard hysterically laughing in the video before take-off.
The Frontier Airlines flight attendant had 150 passengers in stitches in Orlando.

So, with his drive to succeed, did he?  Judge for yourself.

Read the two comments from real passengers unable to conceal their mirth?
  • Cindy, from Colorado Springs, said: 'He must be the world's funniest flight attendant. He was so personable and had us all in stitches - hook, line and sinker.

  • (unsourced) When he started his announcement it really perked people up and we all expected it to escalate in humor, which it did.

and now, the script  101 Thanx to MTP

Read and drop a hearty, merry laugh

If you do decide to leave you will not be allowed access back on board and parachutes are not included. Here at Frontier Airlines we like to keep up with all the latest fashion trends.

In the event that this flight becomes a cruise, all of you lucky people get your own itsy-bitsy-teenie-weenie-yellow polka-dot bikinis beneath your seat. Minus the ittsy bitsy teenie weenie and you get no polka dots.

Once you’re outside the aircraft, pull on sharply on the red tube that’s on the front, or for those of you who love to make life difficult, you can blow to that red tube near your shoulder to blow. I mean inflate.
The beautiful bikini is equipped with a water-activated light.
How in the world that works I have no idea. So, so if you figure it out, please do let me know. And, if by chance it does not inflate, well, grab your neighbor and hold on for dear life.

Collocation and use of life vest for your child that shows the most potential is located in the safety information card. If needed due to a loss of cabin pressure, four oxygen masks will drop from the compartment over your head.
Ignore those and grab the nearest flight attendant in order to get some air. I’m just kidding. I’m so lonely…

Once you stop screaming, place that mask over your nose and your mouth. To adjust, pull on the elastic tabs on either side. Make sure to adjust your own mask before ....
assisting your favorite child, another passenger, or your husband who’s definitely screaming louder than you are. And let’s be honest, only those of you who the extra 49.99 get any oxygen.

Smoking of any kind is not allowed on the aircraft, unless you’re like me and you’re smoking pot

Thank you so much for your attention, sit back, relax and enjoy your flight to Colorado Springs.
And for those of you who didn’t give us your full attention: good luck…
