wsh_WR_How to make the most of my article summarizing

A forgotten WRIGHT:
  THE  RITE  OF  RIGHT  WRITING

This was developed
 in the last century
(Ask your grandparents....)

Our task is getting somehow a long text for our standards (375 words),
5 (6) good paragraphs in most cases.

A.      Our goal

You might want to summarize an article. These are:

·         To condense quite a lot of information into a small space
·         To increase your understanding of an article
·         To activate your vocabulary
·         To go beyond your basic syntax structures

B.      Our goal
You would need to skim through the article first. Be sure you made a wide decision as you may spend one hour working on it…

a.    go through it again and again as you clarify some points you might have missed before until you completely understand. Understanding before summarizing is the essence here.
b.    Take notes spotting its main ideas in the article and jotting them down helps you get that clear picture
c.    It is better than underlining lots of text! In your own words, rewrite those main ideas. Mind you, your sentences will only tell the broader picture not the details. Therefore, your sentences should not match the original.
d.    As you read, keep questioning yourself of what points come out as important in the article. Those are the first hints.

C.      List of proposals-01

D.    Write itWhen you refer to the author for the first time, you always use their full name. When you refer to the author after that, you always use their last name. To show they are an authoritative source. The TWO sentences below show ways to do this.

             Attention to VERBS:

In "Global Warming isn't Real," Steven Collin, a professor at the University of Michigan, claims that ... According to Collin's perspective ... Collin criticizes...  In conclusion, Collin elaborates about .

New York Times critic Johann Bachman argues in "Global Warming is the Next Best Thing for the Earth" that ...  As Bachman implies in the story about ...    Bachman  supports this view by pointing out
  • ADJECTIVES: In his unusual humorous style, Huxley warns … The eerie situations let you…. A gloomy outcome hints at ominous….
  • ADVERBS:   eagerly - radically – loosely – sharply - wearily
The summary should end with the author's conclusion or last main point, most times with a statement about what the author is trying to convince the reader to believe, do, or think.
