monologue - so much time had gone by.

CHALLENGING TASK:  5 min

RECORD the piece about
Time is fleeing away from us

from Dani Rovira's monologue (2016)
"Do you want to go out with me?"

  •  un trocito de un monológo "¿Quiéres salir conmigo?" de Dani Rovira que me gusta especialmente.

PRACTICE ...  AND YOU'LL GET THE KNACK OF IT!

TIP    :       make 9 different tracks to see your progress
  • as u move from passage 1 to passage 4.
  • The go faster at the lst 4 passages

Q1) Has it ever happened to you that when we were little we saw the other kids at school cole as very big? And how we still had a long way to go, right?
And when you didn’t expected it, pam! you were one of them. And you didn't have the feeling of being that big, right? It didn't seem like so much time had gone by.

P2) The same thing happened to me with the kids from the university. i said: Cool, now the university is taking charge of their lives ... with the careers they like so much, with their own cars ...And when you least expected it, pam! you were already one of them. .. and you didn't have the feeling of being in charge of your life, right? And many times you studied a degree that you did not like, right? Uff, and the car was not yours.

P3) And then I saw the age of  the 30s as ... ufff, a super distant age ... and when I will turn frightful 30 I would become a responsible, mature person, with my own family, ...Pam, and look. And I think the same of the 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, one hundred. And this goes like this. Time is never at a rest.Time waits for no one, the only consolation that we have left is that time is the same for everyone ... A shitty consolation, but well ... A consolation "

P4) "A long time ago I read one of Ramón Gómez de la Serna's wonderful greguerías, and from here I recommend you read them, because they are great,… I read one that ever since  has been recorded here and I cannot take it off (from my head), it goes as this: when we look out into the abyss of old age, a child always comes and pushes us from behind ... "F +++ off

P5) "Time ... Time ... I think time is the most contradictory concept that has been created in humanity ... And, if not, listen to this: time has always existed, right? Always, There has been time all days, the time has always been there, but, curious as it is, for the vast majority of things, there is no time.

Q6) Personally, I would love to be able to read all the books that have been written, all! from the first to the last, but it is not possible, it is impossible ... because there is no time. "

Q7) I would love to be able to see all the films that have been shot, all of them, from the best to the worst, all, but it is impossible ... it cannot be done, because there is no time. "

Q8) I would love to travel to all the countries of the world, I would love to  speak as many languages as possible, I would love to practice all sports, even have a coffee with all the people I have loved, with all the people I love, and with the many people who surely I will,…
but it cannot, because there is no time…. there is no time ".

                   Some guidelines (from Heinle publishers)
Scripts
Some people find that reading a script while watching a movie is very helpful. Of course it can help you understand what you are hearing, but it can also help you to learn new vocabulary, grammar and idioms. It can also help you to listen for thought groups, reduced vowels and sentence stress. Scripts for many movies, old and new, are available at SimplyScripts. Find a script for a movie you can rent from the video store and then try one or more of these activities. These activities can be a lot of fun if you work with a friend or classmate.

Listening to and Pronouncing Thought Groups
Choose a one or two minute scene from your movie. Find it in the script. Listen to the scene and notice how the actors break their ideas into thought groups. Mark each thought group with slashes. You will probably need to listen more than once. Once you have marked the thought groups that you hear, compare your markings with a friend's or classmate's. If you are uncertain, ask your teacher for help.

Rewind your video and listen again. This time take the roles of the characters and practice speaking along with them. Then try reading your lines without the images. Perform your scene for your class.

Listening to and Pronouncing difficult items
Choose a couple of lines from your movie. Find them in the script. Read the lines and underline the elements (vowels/consonants/syllables, etc)  you may find difficult to pronounce (reduced items).

Listen to the lines. As you listen, circle each problematic item. Check your predictions to see if they were correct. Listen to the scene and notice how they were delivered (intonation, emphasis...). Then, rewind the video and repeat after the actors. Be sure to pronounce them correctly.

Those wonders, the power of the reflective learner

Those reflective learners

 who ponder their strategies

 and revise them

ESSAY  by    J  Enrique B

for a handful of similar stuff ... here

A reflective learner ponders about the power of spoken words

Throughout this academical year, I've tried to improve my oral skills by speaking aloud and recording myself, mainly. Analysing my own speech has been one of my best allies in the task of correcting an endless number of personal mistakes related to intonation and stress patterns.
In general terms, transcribing and improving a spontaneous speech before recording myself back ( like in class-life activities  "My Leisure time", "Silly questions about Literature" or "Those years") have been very useful tasks, particularly to do better some aspects related to fluency.

Working on dialogues of different films Lethal weapon, French kiss, The accidental tourist - has been a new task for me. I've felt it particularly interesting to practise "real English", that includes repetition of words as well as false starts, noises, intonation problems and, of course, pronunciation. But in the wrong side, ther is always an dark side, it is the fact that you have to spend a lot of time only for preparing the text, that, moreover, has to be read in its own atmosphere, alone, quiet.

Practising "theoretical sounds" (Oxford  Headway Upper Intermediate Pronunciation) is a quite boring activity, although I have to reckon that after training the different tones a lot of times, I have made improvements in the quality of the sounds, but even in this way, some of them are a hopeless question. Up to now I have included a list of them in the section "Working with the text book”). In this part of my work I've added some conversations only for working on specific sounds that can be practised following our  parallel reading technique.

I've met up different people only with the purpose of improving in a practical way my oral skills but, by different reasons our relationships has been a sort of minefield. Perhaps, we have not been on the same wavelength or our aims were not in harmony.

I've realized I've brushed up in listening skills throughout this year, particularly by avoiding the wish of understanding all the words of the dialogues. Writing the phrases that you can identify while you are listening to people, in a sort of quick-writing, is a recommendable experience. It is a hard activity but it has proven to be the most valuable one in the end.

When I've started feeling stuck in a kind of plateau, films, comics - see Tintin's adventures in Writing File - and music - Frank Sinatra's songs were the first ones that I could understand effortlessly - have been my loyal friends albeit being done My way. Listening again old records, nostalgic bits and pieces  you had worked thru in the past,  a constructive task that can encourage you in the worst moments. Going down yourself is useless.

I've been aware of the fact that working with tapes and doing regularly both parallel reading and a varied range Listening tasks –even self-dictation with a clip of a commercial!- are invaluable activities, mainly as instruments of improving aspects like rhythm, imitation or emphasis. Step by step, you can discover new discourse markers or new ways of encouraging the speakers. I've worked these topics with Listening Advanced -Oxford, CAE course cassettes and our Masterclass cassettes.

Writing workshop: new media on brands talked about

Dealing with WR_2.
Draw conclusions from the graph
            do NOT describe it.

  •   Brands on Facebook
  •  Americans like Walmart

PART1. Language work

GRAPH ON BRANDS ON FACEBOOK  -2013  Ω

Back in October 2011, Facebook launched a new metric titled “People Talking About,” which helps page owners see how many users are talking about or mentioning them at any given time.

PS: While Coca-Cola remains the top brand on Facebook, it can’t compete with recording artist Shakira. Although she has less fans at around 69 million, over 2.5 million people are talking about her.

TASK  0. What are the (two) main conclusions we can draw from this graph?

You will find more statistics at Statista

TASK 1a. What are the changes in these  3 intro paragraphs a) b) and  c) ?

a) This graph illustrates the 10 most popular corporate brands on Facebook. It shows a list, ranked in decreasing order, based on people’s talking in August, 19th 2015.

b) Coca Cola is a recognized brand known around the world, but which is its real impact in social networks? This graph illustrates the 10 most popular corporate brands on Facebook. It shows a list, ranked in decreasing order, based on people’s talking in August, 19th 2015.

c) Granted, iconic brands have always been a recognized money power worldwide, but in the VR we might wonder which is its real impact in social networks. This graph above provided by Statista illustrates the 10 most popular corporate brands on Facebook. The bar is given in a list, ranked in decreasing order, based on people’s talking in summer 2015.

TASK 1b. Can you enhance this intro paragraph? Write a similar paragraph, changing the syntax, adding one sentence and rephrasing some of the clauses above.

TASK 2a.  Underline quality language expressions in the body of the text.

To begin with, it’s clearly seen Coca Cola leading the ranking with just over a million of comments on Facebook, but we can’t ignore the fact that Avon is a qualified runner-up with slightly less than a million. Interestingly enough, Walmart and Disney enjoy a great number of comments around three quaRters of a million; and Samsung and Intel lag behind on the threshold of the 600,000. These six brands reach well over two thirds of the total of people’s talking taking into account the top ten.

Finally, in the last positions we can appreciate 4 brands: Bud Light, Guarana Antarctica, NBA and Visa. Each of these brands has shown a similar trend, reaching around half a million comments. Moreover, it’s important to emphasize the fact that Coca Cola displays a two-fold increase at the comments of the least commented brand. Overall, we could be aware about which are the most important brands on Facebook.

TASK2b. Copy the best four expressions where the writer relates to figures.

TASK 3a.  Underline quality language expressions in this final paragraph.

In conclusion, it’s obvious that Coca cola has the bulk of this ranking, but we have to pose a question on us: is there a correlation between this result and the marketing? All of us know that Coca cola is an icon and has achieved a tremendous symbolism in our society, but this brand has known adapted through the years, so that even with new technologies. For this reason, Coca cola is the most popular brand in the networks, far from other soft drink in the market.

TASK 3b. Can you see some minor changes? Do they enhance this final paragraph?

In conclusion, it’s obvious that Coca cola has the bulk of this ranking, but we have to pose a question on ourselves: is there a correlation between this result and the brand market share? All of us know that Coca cola is an iconic brand...  which has achieved a tremendous symbolism in our society as a family brand, which has known how to adapt throughout the years, which even with new social media tools around it is ahead of its competitors. For this reason, Coca cola has kept the top ranking as the most popular brand in the networks, far from other firms (on the drink sector or whatever) in the market.

TASK 3c. Can you enhance this final paragraph?
Write a similar paragraph, changing
the syntax, adding one sentence and rephrasing some of the clauses below.

Rounding off:
PART2. Language is fun:  Do it yourself

TASK. Prepare something alike using this graph.
